This does not look like a good prospect at all, but should there have been a disintegration, there's no reason for the equipment to have been left out. So, I'm confident it was a teleport.

I think Sol's suggestion is good, but what do we do afterwards? Just wait? try the other arch, maybe portal? Find a rat and through it first, just to see what it does?
