This is a question for Greg, or others from "back in the day" of Dave's early campaigns.

There is a discussion on DF about the first ever critical hit and/or fumble chart:
http://www.dragonsfoot.org/forums/viewt ... 11&t=71701

I can't recall exactly when my group brought critical hits into OD&D. As long as I can remember a natural 20 has been a critical hit and a natural 1 a fumble, but I can't recall where we got the rule or when we brought it into play. I think that EPT had a crit rule as early as 1975, but Gary and Dave came up with so many rules early on and I wondered if anyone had a more definite answer to this.

Just a little bump, in case this post slipped past. Anyone recall the first crit charts?

For some reason I'm thinking that the natural 20 rule may trace back to EPT in '75. (A lot of our home brew rules were EPT or Judges Guild in origin.) I'll need to dust off my boxed set and look around...

I am afraid that I don't recall when we started using critical hits. Critical hist and fumbles are something I take for granted, but I don't recall when or where we first used them. Sorry I missed this earlier.

No problem, Greg. Just thought you might have a memory about it.

I agree that crit charts go back in my game as long as I can remember, but since they aren't in the OD&D rulebooks (other than the hit location charts in Supplement II Blackmoor) I was hoping to track down my source. Still betting on EPT, but I haven't had time to check it out.
